OPNsense is a FreeBSD based firewall and routing platform. Being a fork of pfSense (which itself has been a fork of M0n0wall), OPNsense has heavily modernized the platform over the last couple of years.

Having had next to no security issues in the past (and those that were have been fixed quickly) is ensuring that your infrastructure stays protected.

OPNsense is open source and can be used for free (Community Edition). If you want commercial support you can also buy a subscription at a very fair rate.

Virtualization

There are no legal restrictions if you want to install OPNsense as a virtual machine, too.
